What Is Enby Therapy?

At Expansive Therapy, we are passionate about queer empowerment, and we work with many people whose gender exists outside the binary. Whether you identify as nonbinary, genderqueer, genderfluid, agender, or are still exploring, you deserve therapy that recognizes and respects the complexity of your identity — without needing an explanation or disclaimer.

“Enby” is a casual term that comes from the initials “NB” for nonbinary, and while it doesn't represent every experience, we use it here to refer to the broad range of gender identities outside of the male/female binary.

Our therapists — many of whom are queer and nonbinary themselves — offer care that’s informed by lived experience and clinical training.

What Does Nonbinary-Affirming Therapy Look Like?

Nonbinary-affirming therapy is in some ways similar to general therapy — grounded in respect, curiosity, and connection — but with an explicit awareness of how gender diversity shapes a person’s life.

Depending on what you're navigating, sessions might include:

  • Exploring your gender in a supportive, non-pathologizing space

  • Working through misgendering, erasure, or systemic transphobia

  • Processing queer and trans community dynamics or chosen family

  • Managing anxiety, depression, or trauma with contextual care

  • Supporting social, medical, or legal transition (if desired)

Common Themes We See in Enby Therapy

Some of the patterns we regularly support:

  • Feeling unseen or erased — at home, work, or even in LGBTQ+ spaces

  • Navigating binaries in healthcare, education, or employment

  • Holding pride and exhaustion in being visibly gender-diverse

  • Needing space to question, shift, or move fluidly with gender

  • Building a sense of safety in your body or presentation

We also support people who don’t feel comfortable with any label at all. Your therapist will open up a space where you can feel comfortable exploring without feeling the pressure to land somewhere specific.

Therapy in California — Online, Accessible, Affirming

California is often seen as a progressive state, but that doesn’t guarantee affirming care — especially for nonbinary folks in rural or conservative areas. Many of our clients tell us they’ve struggled to find therapists who truly allow their gender to expand, even in cities.

We offer virtual therapy statewide, serving clients in:

  • Los Angeles

  • San Francisco & Bay Area

  • Oakland & East Bay

  • San Diego

  • Sacramento

  • Central Valley

About Our Therapists

Our team includes queer, trans, and nonbinary clinicians with specialties in:

  • Trauma and complex PTSD

  • Neurodivergent-affirming care (ADHD, autism)

  • Gender exploration and transition support

  • Relationship structures outside the norm (poly, kink, etc.)

We work from frameworks that are intersectional, anti-oppressive, and grounded in real community experience.
