You deserve therapy that doesn’t minimize your past or make you explain your identity. Our queer-affirming therapists help you process trauma with clarity, compassion, and care.
Start Your Healing Process
LGBTQ+ trauma therapy is designed to support people who’ve experienced harm related to identity, community, or lived experience. That could include rejection, abuse, medical trauma, religious trauma, institutional discrimination, or more subtle forms of chronic invalidation.
What makes this kind of therapy different is that it centers the queer experience from the start: no need to explain the language you use, your pronouns, or the impact of microaggressions. This is care that names the pain and helps you move through it.
Get Trauma-Informed Support
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to trauma, especially when your lived experience includes layers of identity-based harm. At Expansive Therapy, we offer a space where LGBTQ+ trauma is named, not minimized. Our therapists are trained in somatic and relational modalities that support healing from systemic violence, rejection, and internalized shame — all through a lens of queer-affirming care.
You’ll find us in Midtown Manhattan, tucked just a few blocks from the 1/2/3 line, a commute away from Ridgewood, Alphabet City, or wherever the day takes you. Clients tell us they appreciate having a space that’s grounded, not clinical; open, not overwhelming.
Learn About Our Team
Trauma doesn’t live in the past. It lives in your nervous system, your relationships, your sense of safety. Our approach to LGBTQ trauma therapy is gentle, collaborative, and rooted in trust-building. You might begin by exploring the language you use to describe what happened, or by noticing how your body reacts to certain memories. Some sessions will focus on boundary repair; others on grief, shame, or identity reclamation.
You set the pace. We help guide the process, whether through talk therapy, somatic attunement, or trauma-informed relational work. From your very first session, you can expect warmth, clarity, and zero pressure to perform or explain.

What Clients Say About LGBTQ Trauma Therapy at Expansive
Clients come to us after being dismissed, pathologized, or made to feel like their trauma needed a more “neutral” container. What they find here is different.
Expansive Therapy is built on the belief that trauma and identity can’t be separated, and healing happens when all parts of you are held with care. Our therapists don't tiptoe around hard topics or dilute your truth. We meet it, together, with tools and training that center resilience, safety, and agency.
Some clients are working through the aftermath of religious trauma. Others are navigating the long tail of rejection, family estrangement, or systemic harm. Across the board, the feedback is clear: this space feels like it was built for us, because it was.
"I can't say how much I adore [my therapist]! I truly love speaking with her every week, and I really enjoy the advice and cooping skills she offers. I would highly recommend her to anyone, any day."

We know that trauma is already complicated, and your insurance coverage shouldn’t be. Expansive Therapy is an out-of-network provider, which means we work with most PPO and POS plans that include out-of-network mental health benefits. Before your first session, our admin team will verify your insurance, send you a detailed quote, and handle claims on your behalf.
Session rates range from $75 to $250 depending on your therapist’s experience, which is about 35% below the NYC average. We take care of the paperwork so you can focus on what actually matters: healing.
