Therapy that invites you to expand beyond binaries and show up fully as yourself. Whether you’re looking to explore gender or sexuality, work through queer trauma, shed internalized queerphobia, or simply be affirmed in your queerness as you explore other aspects of life, our New York queer therapists are here for you.
Learn more about Queer Therapy

Queer therapy is a modality that seeks not only to affirm the identities of gay, trans, and queer individuals, but also invites fluidity and expansion of self into the therapy room. Early in life, queer individuals find themselves in dangerous situations where they need to make themselves small to survive, so queer therapy aims to move in the opposite direction, healing through expansion. Our queer therapists work slowly and intentionally to establish trust and safety.
Queer therapy is well suited for LGBTQ folks of all identities, and those who are questioning or curious. Whether you’re working through internalized homophobia or internalized transphobia, looking to explore a new identity, or simply want a queer therapist who gets it, we are here to support you.

At Expansive Therapy, we are passionate about Queer Affirming Therapy. Most of our New York queer therapists are queer identified themselves, and all of us are competent and clinically trained in supporting the queer community. We have trained with some of the world’s leading trauma experts and are proud to offer trauma-informed queer therapy. Wherever you are on the queer spectrum, we meet you with respect, curiosity, and compassion. We never make assumptions based on an identity, we honor the uniqueness of your story.
You shouldn’t have to feel like you have to silence parts of yourself to get quality care. At Expansive Therapy, we invite you to bring your whole self to therapy.
See what we’re about
Queer therapy sessions meet you where you are, whatever is going on at this stage in your life. We don’t stick to rigid structures but rather favor emotional processing in the here and now as a way of strengthening the mind-body connection, breaking through binary thinking, and building trust in the therapy room.
When thinking becomes rigid and binary, queer therapy aims to invite fluidity and expansion into the room. Queer therapy is strengths based and aims to connect you with your authentic self and power.

What Clients Say About Queer Therapy At Expansive
Clients typically come to us having had experiences in therapy where they didn’t feel safe to be their full selves. That could be an outright experience of discrimination and pathologization, or a more subtle experience… therapist distancing, anxious therapist, a gentle steering towards heteronormativity, or needing to take care of their therapist.
Clients typically feel a sense of relief when they start therapy with us, from the therapy room to our support staff who are also trained to be queer affirming. Some of the issues clients focus on are internalized homophobia, queer religious trauma, minority stress, relationship difficulties, as well as all the typical mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Our therapists strike a balance between affirming queerness while not making it everything. We realize that most queer people are coming to therapy for issues that aren’t directly related to their queerness, but having that affirming container can lead to expansion of the self, which helps with healing those issues.
"I highly recommend this therapy practice. They are very transparent with payment structures and easy to coordinate with. My therapist was engaged, flexible, and just so, so helpful in my personal growth journey. They also have a newsletter with interesting and reflective topics. Highly recommend for people seeking LGBTQ+ and nonmonogamy inclusive therapy."

Therapy should feel accessible from the very beginning, including the financial part. Expansive Therapy is an out-of-network provider, and we work with most PPO and POS insurance plans that offer out-of-network mental health benefits.
Before your first session, our admin team will verify your benefits, send you a clear breakdown of your coverage. After you start, we'll handle claim submissions for you and claim denials, so you don’t have to spend time on paperwork or insurance phone calls.
Session rates range from $75 to $250, depending on your therapist’s level of experience, around 35% below NYC’s typical rates. Whether you're coming in from SoHo, Hamilton Heights, or Prospect Heights, we’ll help you understand your options clearly and compassionately.
