What Is Depression Therapy?

What Is Depression Therapy?

Depression therapy helps people move through experiences of sadness, numbness, disconnection, or hopelessness. It can include evidence-based approaches like CBT, EMDR, or talk therapy, and may explore both the internal and external factors that contribute to depressive symptoms like trauma, systemic stress, or relationship patterns.

There’s no one-size-fits-all path through depression. What matters most is having a therapist who gets it, and who can sit with your pain while helping you build toward relief, connection, and meaning.

What To Expect From Depression Therapy

What To Expect From Depression Therapy

Starting therapy for depression doesn’t require you to feel “ready," just willing.

In your first sessions, your therapist will help you explore what’s weighing you down and how it’s affecting your mood, body, relationships, and sense of self.

You might work on developing coping tools, identifying internal narratives, or simply learning to feel again after a period of numbness or shutdown.

There’s no pressure to be “productive” in sessions. We focus on creating a space where you can show up as you are, without masks, without fixing, and without judgment.

What Happens Inside Us When We Feel Low?

Depression often shows up as a heaviness, a sense of being stuck, or a disconnection from yourself. In this video, Expansive Therapy founders Nick Fager and Megan Murphy introduce the basics of Internal Family Systems (IFS), a framework we often use in sessions to help you better understand the different parts of you that show up in response to pain, fear, or overwhelm.

Rather than pushing feelings away, IFS invites you to relate to them differently. You'll learn how to meet the inner voices with compassion, get to know the parts that are trying to protect you, and reconnect with a deeper sense of self. This is what therapy with us can feel like: curious, grounded, and deeply respectful of your internal world.
