What In-Person Therapy Can Offer (That Screens Can’t)

What In-Person Therapy Can Offer (That Screens Can’t)

There’s a kind of settling that can happen when therapy lives in its own space. You walk in, and the world outside stays exactly where it is. You take the same seat each week. You notice your breath. You don’t have to negotiate with a screen, or rearrange your life to find thirty minutes of quiet. The room becomes part of the work. It holds your rhythms, your silences, your truths, without needing to be anything else.

Some clients come in after navigating rush hour on Beverly. Others swing by between shifts, still in scrubs. Whatever you’re carrying, you don’t have to carry it alone. Our space in Larchmont is intentionally quiet, light-filled, and easy to find. But more than that, it’s yours while you’re in it. You don’t need to perform calmness. You just need to come in.

How We Approach In-Person Therapy at Expansive Therapy LA

How We Approach In-Person Therapy at Expansive Therapy LA

How We Approach In-Person Therapy at Expansive Therapy LA

Our office is tucked into a quiet corner of Larchmont Village, where the light shifts across the floor during your session and the sound of the hallway fades as the door closes. Inside, you’ll find space to soften, to speak freely, or to sit in silence until words catch up. This is therapy shaped by who you are, not just what you’ve been through.

Some clients stop by after a morning shift at Cedars. Others arrive straight from lunch at All Time or an hour of sitting in traffic on the 101. Whatever brings you in, you’re not expected to leave parts of yourself at the door. Our therapists show up fully with curiosity, cultural competence, and care that doesn’t feel clinical, unless that's what you want.

What It’s Like to Begin In-Person Therapy

What It’s Like to Begin In-Person Therapy

Your first session might feel like a slow exhale. It might feel awkward, or tender, or a little like you’re watching yourself from the outside. That’s okay. You’re not expected to arrive with the right words or a polished story. We’re here to meet you, not analyze you.

As therapy unfolds, the room becomes a place where different versions of you can breathe: the anxious one, the angry one, the part of you that doesn’t usually get airtime. Some weeks you might talk through everything. Other weeks you might sit in stillness, letting the silence do its work. Our therapists know how to be with you in all of it.

Growing Through Balance

Real growth happens in safe, grounded spaces. In this conversation, Expansive Therapy co-founders Nick Fager and Megan Murphy explore the concept of “bend, don’t break”, learning to push gently toward healing without overwhelming yourself.

In-person therapy offers the connection and presence that make this process possible, supporting you as you grow at a pace that feels steady and sustainable.

Trusted by the LGBTQ+ Community in LA

Our clients often arrive carrying the weight of past therapy that didn’t feel like therapy at all, sessions where they had to explain the basics, or soften the truth to make it palatable. That’s not what happens here.

At Expansive, we build relationships with depth and care. Our team reflects the communities we serve: queer, trans, neurodivergent, first-gen, BIPOC. We don’t just tolerate complexity; we expect it. Clients tell us they feel seen in a way that’s rare, and that the room becomes a space where nothing has to be translated. That’s the kind of work we do here.

"The Expansive team is wonderful and world-class, really progressive and caring about their clients. I've met a couple of the therapists and have really enjoyed working with them. Highly recommend!"
Emma Matthieson, ★★★★★

Making Sense of Therapy Coverage

Making Sense of Therapy Coverage

Making Sense of Therapy Coverage

We’re out-of-network providers, which means you can work with us even if we’re not listed in your insurance plan’s directory. If you have a PPO or POS plan, we’ll verify your benefits before you begin and submit claims on your behalf, so you’re not left navigating confusing paperwork alone.

Session rates vary by therapist, and we’re intentional about offering accessible rates compared to typical LA private-pay therapy. If you’re unsure what your plan covers, we’ll walk you through it before you commit.

In-person care is available in LA, but if you’re located in New York, you can still work with an Expansive therapist virtually. We offer online therapy throughout New York State with clinicians who understand the energy and demands of the city, without asking you to leave your apartment to talk through the hard stuff.

In-person therapy can be a foundation, but it’s not the whole picture. Many of our LA clients also explore care through relationship work, family dynamics, and group processing. Our specialties are built with you in mind: expansive, affirming, and flexible enough to grow with you.
