Too many bi folks are erased or misunderstood, even in therapy. We’re here to honor your full experience, not question it.

What Bisexual-Affirming Therapy Really Means

What Bisexual-Affirming Therapy Really Means

Bisexual-affirming therapy is built on the understanding that bisexuality isn’t confusion, a phase, or a placeholder. It’s a valid, whole identity. It's an identity that’s often invisibilized, even in LGBTQ+ spaces.

This kind of therapy centers your identity. That means exploring how bi-erasure, biphobia, and binary thinking may have shaped your relationships, your self-trust, and your sense of belonging. It means working with a therapist who sees your identity as real, and relevant, from day one.

Therapy here is built to catch the moments most others miss. From Larchmont Village, our team hears the ways openness and erasure collide: bi partners who feel unseen by straight people, by gay people, by the space between what people expect.

Sessions explore when you felt split between choices, misunderstood by rules, or boxed in by binary definitions. We work with your full self: attractions, fluidity, uncertainty, regret, joy. All of it matters.

Some clients come in after dinner in Echo Park, replaying words that seemed to erase their truth. Others arrive from long hours behind the counter in Silver Lake, still carrying lecturing looks from strangers. Whatever your story, your therapist starts with what you carry and builds from there.

What It’s Like to Work With a Bisexual-Affirming Therapist

What It’s Like to Work With a Bisexual-Affirming Therapist

You can expect to bypass proving your identity, performing your pain, or having a linear timeline of what’s “wrong.” We work together to create a space where you feel safe, first and foremost. After this, you might start with a memory that’s hard to shake. You might not know where to start. Both are valid.

Some weeks are quiet and tentative. Others dig deep into long-ignored moments: the first time you felt invisible in a relationship, or the way “both/and” has always felt like “not enough” to someone else. This is a space where nothing about your bisexuality is up for debate. Instead, we help you find more freedom in how you relate, connect, and feel understood.

Understanding Distance, Finding Connection

Sometimes we push people away as a way of protecting ourselves. In this conversation, Expansive Therapy co-founder Megan Murphy and resident therapist Blair Bohuny explore avoidant tendencies, and how they can show up when safety and trust feel uncertain.

Bisexual-affirming therapy reflects this same compassionate lens, creating a space to examine patterns shaped by stigma or invisibility, nurture self-compassion, and build relationships where your full identity is seen and valued.

Why Our Clients Trust Us for Bisexual-Affirming Therapy in LA

At Expansive Therapy, we understand that bisexual clients are often expected to explain, justify, or shrink themselves, even in queer spaces. That’s not how we work.

Our therapists are trained in identity-affirming, trauma-informed care that acknowledges the complexity and nuance of bi+ experience without turning it into a talking point. We center your lived reality, not textbook assumptions.

Clients choose us because they feel fully seen here. Some find us after years of navigating healthcare systems that didn’t know how to talk about fluidity. Others are newly out and want support without sensationalism. Either way, we’re here with language that fits, care that lands, and space that expands with you.

"This was my 4th time in the last decade that I decided to start therapy. Having been through 3 rounds that I felt wasn't addressing my issues in a way to keep me motivated to stay in, I wasn't exactly optimistic but took a friend's recommendation that this team is different. Especially for LGBT community. Different it was and it continues to be. Expansive Therapy exceeded my expectations. I was surprised how quickly my therapist identified trends in my behaviour and gave me hope that this could have a tangible impact on my life . It is also very reasonably priced. Excited to continue, unlike my previous experiences, for a long time to come."

We’re an out-of-network provider, which means we don’t bill your insurance directly, but we do help make the process easier.

If you have a PPO plan with out-of-network benefits, we can provide detailed invoices (superbills) you can submit for potential reimbursement.

Many clients receive partial reimbursement, and our admin team is happy to guide you through what that could look like. We also offer sliding scale slots depending on therapist availability.

Therapy doesn’t happen in a vacuum. For many bisexual clients, questions about identity sit alongside anxiety, relational dynamics, or a quiet undercurrent of sadness that’s hard to name. You don’t need to choose between them. Our team works across specialties that often intersect, and we're here to hold the full scope of your experience.
