Defining Gay Therapy

Defining Gay Therapy

Gay therapy is therapy grounded in the realities of being gay in a world that often misunderstands or marginalizes that experience. It means working with someone who won’t minimize your identity or require you to educate them.

From processing internalized homophobia to exploring relationships, mental health, and community, gay therapy creates space to be fully seen and supported.

Our approach to gay therapy is rooted in affirmation and depth. We understand the layered realities many gay clients navigate: from family tension and dating burnout to questions of intimacy, identity, and belonging.

That includes the impact of HIV: whether you're living with it, processing stigma, managing disclosure, or simply wanting a space where it doesn’t need explaining. What to Expect from Gay Therapy in LA

What to Expect from Gay Therapy in LA

Gay therapy offers a space to unpack the nuanced, layered experience of being a gay man in today’s world from self-worth and dating to family history and identity evolution. Whether you're out and proud or still navigating your relationship with your sexuality, therapy can help you find clarity and connection.

In your sessions, you might:

  • Explore how internalized homophobia or heteronormativity may have shaped your beliefs

  • Talk about sex, relationships, dating apps, or loneliness without needing to censor

  • Reclaim joy, pleasure, and confidence

  • Reflect on past trauma or rejection and how it still shows up

  • Build a life that reflects who you truly are, not just who you’ve been expected to be

We’re here to support the real you with curiosity, empathy, and care that’s grounded in lived experience.

Therapy That Truly Understands You

Feeling seen and understood in therapy can change everything. In this conversation, Expansive Therapy co-founders Nick Fager and Megan Murphy share five signs it might be time to switch to a queer-affirming therapist, and why finding the right fit matters.

Gay therapy is about more than support; it’s about having a space where your experiences are honored, your identity is celebrated, and your growth is guided with understanding and care.

Why Clients Choose Expansive Therapy in Los Angeles for Gay Therapy

For many clients, starting gay-affirming therapy at Expansive is the first time they feel fully seen as someone whose identity deeply matters in the room. Therapy here isn’t about fixing you; it’s about understanding the systems, stories, and experiences that shaped you. And from that place, making space for real healing.

Clients come to us looking for therapists who get it, who understand the cultural, emotional, and relational weight of growing up gay, of navigating rejection, of seeking connection. At Expansive, that understanding runs deep. Our approach is relational, affirming, and rooted in the belief that every gay person deserves care that honors their full complexity.

"[My therapist] is an amazing professional. Everything that he conveyed during the CBT sessions was so helpful for my psychological improvement. Best!"

How We Help with Billing & Insurance

How We Help with Billing & Insurance

How We Help with Billing & Insurance

Therapy at Expansive is eligible for out-of-network insurance reimbursement, just like our individual sessions. If you have a PPO or POS plan, we’ll verify your benefits up front and let you know what to expect. Our admin team handles claims so you don’t have to chase paperwork or spend your lunch break on hold with your provider.

We’ll walk you through the cost of the group you’re joining, and whether it’s ongoing or time-limited. You’ll always know what you're paying before the first session. And if a group isn’t reimbursable through your insurance, we’ll be upfront about that too.
