Exploring the Meaning of LGBTQ Couples Counseling

Exploring the Meaning of LGBTQ Couples Counseling

LGBTQ couples counseling is a space for queer and trans partners to explore their relationship with the support of a therapist who actually gets it. That means bringing your full identities into the room (gender, sexuality, culture, family history) and working through conflict, disconnection, or change without needing to educate your therapist along the way.

It’s a place to check in about what’s working, what’s hurting, and what you both want to grow toward. For some, that looks like rebuilding trust. For others, it’s navigating non-monogamy, parenting, or years of resentment that haven’t had a place to land. The work is shaped by who you are, wherever you're coming from.

How Expansive Therapy Approaches LGBTQ Couples Counseling in California

How Expansive Therapy Approaches LGBTQ Couples Counseling in California

We work with couples in every stage of connection: partners in repair, partners in transition, and those building something brand new. Our therapists are trained in relational, trauma-informed, and identity-centered care. That means your gender(s), your history, your boundaries, and your desires don’t get flattened into generic worksheets or advice that doesn’t fit.

Some of our clients show up after months of miscommunication that’s calcified into silence. Others are navigating open relationship dynamics, parenting differences, or just trying to survive the stress of living in the same world. Wherever you’re starting, we begin there without judgment.

What It’s Like to Begin LGBTQ Couples Therapy

What It’s Like to Begin LGBTQ Couples Therapy

The first session is often about exhaling. You don’t need to bring a list of problems or know exactly what’s wrong. Your therapist will help each of you speak, and be heard, without assigning blame. From there, you’ll begin to map out what feels off, what’s been unsaid, and what you both want to build differently.

You can expect sessions to balance reflection, skill-building, and space for emotional honesty. Some weeks will feel clarifying. Others will feel hard. That’s normal. We stay with you through all of it, holding the relationship, and each of you, with care and clarity.

Understanding Distance, Building Connection

Intimacy can feel beautiful, but sometimes triggering. In this conversation, Expansive Therapy co-founder Megan Murphy and resident therapist Blair Bohuny explore why avoidant behaviors show up in relationships, especially when safety and trust haven’t always been present.

For LGBTQ couples, these patterns can surface in unique ways. This video offers a compassionate look at how therapy can help partners recognize these dynamics, nurture self-compassion, and create space for deeper, more authentic connection.
