The Foundations of LGBTQ Trauma Therapy

The Foundations of LGBTQ Trauma Therapy

LGBTQ trauma therapy recognizes how trauma and marginalization can intertwine.

Whether rooted in family rejection, systemic harm, discrimination, or experiences within LGBTQ+ spaces themselves, trauma has a way of lingering in the body, relationships, and self-image.

This kind of therapy offers tools to process, regulate, and move forward with attunement to both your identity and your resilience.

What You’ll Explore in LGBTQ Trauma Therapy

What You’ll Explore in LGBTQ Trauma Therapy

LGBTQ trauma therapy is highly individualized, but you can expect your therapist to move at your pace while gently helping you understand what’s happened, how it’s shaped you, and how it can be healed. Our work may include:

  • Identifying and unpacking trauma rooted in homophobia, transphobia, or rejection

  • Understanding how trauma lives in the body, and gently beginning to reconnect with yours

  • Exploring identity, safety, boundaries, and relationships

  • Reprocessing painful events using evidence-based tools (like EMDR or somatic approaches, depending on your needs)

  • Reclaiming a sense of agency, worth, and trust in yourself

Your therapist will create a space where you don’t have to prove your pain or shrink it down. You’re believed, supported, and never alone in this work.

Repairing, Reconnecting, Healing

Trauma often leaves us feeling separate or disconnected. In this conversation, Expansive Therapy co-founders Nick Fager and Megan Murphy explore the idea of letting go of rigid separateness and entering the shared space between ourselves and others, a step toward repairing ruptures and feeling deeply connected again.

LGBTQ trauma therapy builds on these insights, offering a safe, affirming space to process painful experiences, reclaim trust, and begin healing in ways that honor both your individuality and your relationships.

Meet Our LA Therapists Specialized in LGBTQ Trauma Therapy

Our Los Angeles therapists understand how trauma can shape identity, relationships, and daily life, especially within LGBTQ communities. They bring compassion, cultural awareness, and patience to help you feel safe as you begin to heal.

Why Clients Choose Expansive Therapy in Los Angeles for LGBTQ Trauma Therapy

At Expansive Therapy, clients come to us because they want care that’s deeply informed, grounded in real trauma expertise, and truly attuned to queer and trans experiences.

Many of our clients share that this is the first time they've felt seen by a therapist. That’s not a coincidence. Our entire team has trained directly with leading trauma expert Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score), and we’ve built our practice around the understanding that trauma doesn’t live just in the mind — it’s stored in the body, shaped by systems, and expressed through our relationships.

We integrate cutting-edge trauma modalities like Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, and somatic therapy — all in a space where LGBTQ+ identities are normalized, not explained. Clients tell us they feel safe to show up as they are. That they finally have a therapist who doesn’t make assumptions. That they’re not pushed too hard, too fast, but supported in a way that feels human, respectful, and healing.

We’re proud to hold space for every version of healing, because trauma recovery is never one-size-fits-all. And for queer and trans people who’ve had to fight just to be understood, that difference matters.

"I can't say how much I adore [my therapist]! I truly love speaking with her every week, and I really enjoy the advice and cooping skills she offers. I would highly recommend her to anyone, any day."
Jordan Parker, ★★★★★

How We Help with Insurance & Billing

How We Help with Insurance & Billing

How We Help with Insurance & Billing

We work with most PPO and POS insurance plans that offer out-of-network benefits. That means you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

We’ll verify your benefits, send you a custom quote, and handle the claims for you. If you’ve been burned by confusing billing or endless forms before, this will feel different. No chasing paperwork, no calling your provider six times. Just care that’s actually accessible.

Rates vary depending on your therapist’s experience, with session costs ranging from $75–$250. We don’t offer sliding scale, but many clients use their insurance to offset cost.
